Saving the Daylight

Since my blog is titled, "Beyond the Horizon", thinking about the actual horizon is part of the deal. I own several computers and handhelds plus a myriad of electronic home devices that have clocks so the weekend where the clocks are "changed" is a lot of work. Why do so many things have clocks in them; some for no real reason?

My friend, Tony Vincent, know to us here as the "King of Handheld Devices", has a great blog entry on the phenomenon of Daylight Saving Time. In addition to the essential technical information, he reminds us that there are two great resources available for lessons: Microsoft's Investigating Daylight and the Webexhibit, About Daylight Saving Time.

The arrival of unexpected snow here in Massachusetts while we yearn for spring sunshine keeps our faces springing forward beyond the horizon.

So, what do you think? I gave my friend Kathy Schrock the challenge of creating an alter-ego for me. I added the handheld and the genealogist with the gravestones. It IS who I am!

Kathy keeps re-designing herself for each occasion. We are using these instead of our "normal" photos on Facebook.

On this lovely, cold but bright sunny winter day, I gathered the growing number of ancient cell phones in my house and took this photo before I gave them to Verizon Wireless to "recycle".

The people at the store in Plymouth loved the oldest phone and that I still had the receipt for its purchase.

This is a little more than a ten year span. Time marches on...

Sometimes at conventions there is a must have toy. In this case, Hall Davidson told Kathy Schrock that he bought a red handset for his cell phone at one of the vendors for half the cost of one he could buy locally. So, immediately shopping mode kicked in and Kathy and I headed for the exhibit hall.

Thomas Edison at The Library of Congress

Recently, I had the opportunity to meet Gail Petri, my friend, from The Library of Congress who did a wonderful presentation on primary and secondary resources for teachers. She presented a great model with ideas for the teachers in the audience (from Florida) and suggested that this type of resource could be done for any state or for a topic.

As I am doing my next Frazel Features for Tappedin on February 27 on Thomas Edison, I thought I would develop my search with his name as keyword.

I came up with this Today in History for February 14, which contains the Edison movie "The Kiss". For its time (1900), this movie must have been controversial but now it is a great example of early film that has endured.
